The Association is continental, having its primary area of operation within the Continent of Africa and whose membership is primarily drawn from persons and institutions of Africa as hereinafter provided.

The goals of the consortium are

Venue

To provide a regular venue for informational opportunities and in-depth discussion and debate of the needs and requirements for testing of genetic biocontrol technologies by experts from countries most likely to experience both the risks and the benefits.

Forum

To provide a regular venue for informational opportunities and in-depth discussion and debate of the needs and requirements for testing of genetic biocontrol technologies by experts from countries most likely to experience both the risks and the benefits.

Workshops

To provide a regular venue for informational opportunities and in-depth discussion and debate of the needs and requirements for testing of genetic biocontrol technologies by experts from countries most likely to experience both the risks and the benefits.

Communication

To provide a platform for review of guidelines, raise awareness, providing training and technical support to other key stakeholders, stakeholder engagement and creating public trust at the national, regional, and continental levels during research and field trials/release of genetic biocontrol agents and their products.

Improvement

To promote a consistent approach to research and development and improve operational effectiveness by raising awareness of and offering training to member organizations on applicable regulations and best practices guidance.

Message from the AfBSA President

Dear colleagues and friends,

The African Biological Safety Association (AfBSA) was founded on a shared commitment to protect people, the environment, and our communities from biological risks while enabling responsible life science research and innovation across the continent.

Today, Africa’s biosafety and biosecurity landscape is rapidly evolving. New technologies, from genetic biocontrol to synthetic biology, are opening extraordinary opportunities, but they also bring new responsibilities. Our role as AfBSA is to help African scientists, institutions, and governments build the skills, networks, and frameworks needed to manage these challenges safely and confidently.

Through strong national associations, collaborative training, and open exchange of experience, we aim to strengthen biosafety and biosecurity culture in every African country. AfBSA serves as a continental platform where expertise is shared, partnerships are built, and the next generation of biosafety professionals can grow.

With appreciation and resolve,

Dr. Larbi Baassi
President, African Biological Safety Association (AfBSA)
