Council Member Western Africa

Fred Aboagye-Antwi, Senior Lecturer in medical entomology and parasitology at Department of Animal Biology & Conservation Science at the University of Ghana.

Dr. Fred Aboagye-Antwi is a Senior Lecturer in medical entomology and parasitology at Department of Animal Biology & Conservation Science at the University of Ghana. He is also the In-Country Principal investigator for Target Malaria, Ghana based at the same department at the University of Ghana. Dr. Aboagye-Antwi has also worked as a consultant for Clinvet Research Innovation in South Africa and is currently the out-going Vice president for local chapter of the Pan African Mosquito Control Association (PAMCA) in Ghana. Fred was a post-doctoral fellowship awardee of the Cambridge African Partnership for Research Excellence (CAPREx). He has been honoured to speak and facilitate numerous workshops and conferences both nationally and internationally in the areas of gene drive, data analysis, vector biology, biosafety and disease control. He has published in several peer-reviewed journals and has a strong record of collaboration with fellow researchers around the world. Fred’s research falls under the broader theme of biology and borders on evolutionary ecology, genetics, parasitology, and medical entomology. Generally, his interest lies in better understanding the role of the environment, vectors, hosts, and parasites, as well as their overall interactions in influencing transmission dynamics of tropical vector-borne diseases, with the aim of contributing towards disease control and alleviating poverty, particularly among rural dwellers. His current research focuses on the malaria parasite fitness modulation of Anopheles mosquitoes, ecological immunology of malaria/Anopheles mosquito interactions, ticks and their effects on livestock productivity, characterization of bedbugs and identification of environmental factors influencing their fitness and zoonotic infections. Fred holds a PhD in Medical Entomology and Parasitology from Keele University, United Kingdom, a Postgraduate Diploma in Research Methods from Danish Bilharziasis Laboratory (University of Copenhagen, Denmark) and a Masters degree in Zoology (Parasitology) from University of Ghana. Prior to his Doctoral degree, he was a principal research assistant at the department of Parasitology, Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research.
